Step Into the Sun: Embracing the Shadows in Leadership

step into the sun

We often celebrate the light—confidence, decisiveness, empathy. But stepping into the sun also reveals a shadow: the traits we suppress because they don’t fit how we want to be seen. These might include craving recognition, prioritizing ourselves, or struggling to relinquish control. Though uncomfortable, the shadow offers powerful lessons for growth.

What Is the Shadow?

Carl Jung described the shadow as the part of ourselves we push away—the impatience, the need for validation, the self-interest we’d rather ignore. These traits don’t make us flawed; they make us human. Confronting the shadow, rather than avoiding it, reveals unmet needs and hidden strengths. Growth can occur in this tension between light and shadow.

The Cost of Ignoring the Shadow

When ignored, the shadow doesn’t disappear; it operates beneath the surface. It influences decisions in ways we might not notice, creates blind spots that hinder trust, and can drive us to overcompensate—presenting a polished exterior while feeling disconnected and incomplete within. These patterns limit connection, authenticity, and the ability to lead effectively.

Both/And Thinking: Integrating Light and Shadow

Both/And Leadership embraces both strength of shadow and light. This mindset helps us navigate the tension between these tensions, allowing us to integrate what we celebrate with what we suppress. In doing so, we step into a fuller, more authentic version of ourselves—leading with better clarity, empathy, and impact.

The Transformation of Embracing the Shadow

When we acknowledge the shadow, we gain self-awareness, understanding the deeper motivations behind our actions. This acceptance fosters empathy, enabling us to connect more deeply with others. By owning all parts of ourselves, we inspire trust and authenticity—qualities that resonate deeply with those we come into contact with.

A Reflection for Leaders

Great leadership comes from those who show up fully. This means stepping into the sun and acknowledging the shadow it casts. When we embrace the fullness of who we are, we create space for others to do the same. That’s where real transformation begins—within ourselves, our teams, and the world we seek to lead.
